Alex Malcolmson: Artist

I was born and brought up in the Shetland Isles, the most northerly point in the United Kingdom, a place of wild landscapes, wild seas and wild weather.

I worked in Shetland for a few years after studying Painting at Edinburgh College of Art. I no longer live in Shetland but it remains the source of much of my work as an artist and I visit as much as possible.

In this photograph I am on the West Mainland of Shetland near my father’s birthplace. Foula, Britain’s most remote inhabited island, is on the horizon (under my nose) and I overlook the island of Vaila home of some good friends and happy times and the source of much inspiration and raw material for making my sculpture.
