When the East of the Day Meets the West of the Night

Yuge Zhou: Artist

Collapsing time and space is a theme found in all my work, but particularly in this piece. This work (a 14-minute video) was inspired by a conversation I had with my mother, who lives in Beijing, about the emotional and physical distance between us. When I was talking with her, I had this image in my mind of two figures standing at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, contemplating and looking out towards each other at the same moment, feeling connected despite the physical distance. The project is about the synchronicity of time across both sides of the ocean.

But the irony is that it has remained unfinished for the last year and a half due to both the pandemic and the geopolitical tensions between China and America.
